The abstract is below…we will be discussing the first full year of CAP, and some of the upcoming projects.

The Campus Archaeology Program: How It Came to Be and Where It’s Going

The MSU Campus Archaeology Program (CAP) developed out of the work that the MSU Department of Anthropology conducted at the Saints’ Rest archaeological site. The purpose of CAP is to help MSU act as a good steward for its archaeological resources. We ensure that the University checks for archaeological resources before undertaking projects, conducts archaeological surveys and excavations when necessary, educates the community about its archaeology and MSU’s past, and that the results of all of these efforts are done in conjunction with the various campus units that have an impact on those resources. The 2008-09 academic year was the program’s first full year of engagement. This talk will focus on two critical elements to CAP’s early success: the establishment of administrative and financial support, and the development of working relationships with units such as Physical Plant and University Archives & Collections. Examples of different projects conducted over the past year will be used to discuss how these elements have evolved, how they interact, and what projects we expect in the new year.
